The first fox shrine that I should find in the Toyokawa/Toyohashi area. This one is located at the outskirts of Toyohashi, and I come across it in the evening after walking back to the station from the JMoF (Japan Meeting of Furries), which is what brought me here in the first place.

A side shrine of Susanoo Jinja (素盞鳴神社 "Naked Sake Cup Chirp Shrine"), two tiny porcelain foxes reside within.

This is just a marker post. All shrines before this post are in Nara, and all shrines after this are in Toyokawa, Toyohashi or in between.

The final fox shrine that I should find during my first visit to Nara. This one is again located in a courtyard, but this time, the entrance is to the east. Two tiny porcelain foxes reside within, together with one tiny stone fox who looks to have lost its counterpart.

A tiny side shrine of Gangouji Fudoudou (元興寺不動堂 "Original Pleasure Temple Original Hall"), which is located in a hidden forested courtyard of sorts, that must be accessed through a gate to the west.

This one features ten tiny porcelain foxes, as well as a single lonely life sized stone fox, who is modeled as explicitly male. Since he doesn't have a counterpart, however, this one does not increase the vixen side count.

A tiny side shrine of Goryou Jinja (御霊神社 "Honorable Spirit Shrine") which features two small stone foxes next to the shrine, and another six tiny porcelain foxes on the shrine's porch.

This shrine is also known as Enmusubi-no-Kami (えんむすびの神 "Matchmaking God"), being "in charge" of bringing people together. A plaque next to the shrine literally reads "Matchmaking god for wedding someone wonderful".

Location: Nara
Address:
 40 Nishikideracho, Nara, 630-8307
Coordinates:
 34.67352,135.83362

A tiny vulpine side shrine of Sudou Tennousha (崇道天皇社 "Respected Road Heavenly Emperor Shrine"). Two life-sized stone foxes flank this shrine, one with a rare white bib, and the other with the traditional red bib. Since red and white are considered auspicious colors in Japan and are frequently seen in combination, I'm actually surprised that I didn't see a pairing like this before.

Anyway, there are also six tiny porcelain foxes within the shrine. Also, Sudou Tennousha is a bit tricky to reach: Although it is located only 20m south of the main road, you actually have to go to a side road 70m to the west, and then walk back east to the shrine from there.

Another shrine on the same hill as Ten Jinja, but further to the west. This one features a pair of life-sized weathered old stone foxes to watch over it. It also has a bunch of tiny side shrines, but none of them feature further foxes.

I've seen shrines featuring cow statues as signs of good luck before, but this is the first shrine that I encountered where two cows flank the entrance as shrine guardians. And wearing red bibs too! It is located at the top of a small hill, so you have to climb a few steps to get here.

Tanuki 2 ~ Chounai Anzen

Japanese Name: 町内安全
Romanized Reading: Chounai Anzen
English Translation: Neighborhood Safety
Size: Tiny Side Shrine of Fukuuin

Coordinates:
 34.67661,135.84660

This is only the second Tanuki shrine that I come across, after Fukujushin in Tokyo. This is a humble side shrine to Fukuuin (不空院 "Negative Sky Temple"), or maybe two, but I'm counting it as one. Anyone, a pair of life-sized stone Tanuki statues flank it, and small porcelain Tanuki stands in the middle.

538 ~ Nemu Jinja

Japanese Name: 睡神社

First Visit:
8-Jan-2019
Location: Nara
Address:
 Nara Park
Coordinates:
 34.68489,135.84080

The first fox shrine that I should find in Nara, the city of deer. And since it's located right in the middle of Nara Kouen (奈良公園 "Nara Public Park"), there's actually quite a lot of deer around that are perfectly tame. Anyway, a pair of life-sized stone foxes watch over this shrine. Which is fenced off, by the way, so that the deer can't get too close. Such as this:

This is just a marker post. All shrines before this post are in Kyoto, and all shrines after this are in Nara.

Location: Kyoto-Fushimi ~ Inariyama ~ Torii Road ~ Lower Leg Segment
Address:
2-1 Fukakusa Sasayamacho, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-0811
Coordinates:
 34.96771,135.77665

The final fox shrine that I should find on my first visit to Kyoto. And we're back on Inariyama again, for one last visit! This time, I'm showing a group of furries around. And since I took a slightly different path this time around, I came across this new shrine.

I only came across a pair of life-sized stone foxes here, but I'm sure if I had spent more time looking, I would have found many more in the vicinity.

536 ~ Takaichi Daimyoujin (Wall Shrine)

Japanese Name: 高市大明神
Romanized Reading: Takaichi Daimyoujin
English Translation: Tall City Great Radiant Deity
Size: Tiny
Deity: Inari
Fox Count:

First Visit:
3-Jan-2019
Location: Kyoto-Shimogyou
Address:
 57-1 Masuyachō, Shimogyō-ku, Kyoto, 600-8195
Coordinates:
 34.99398,135.76262

The final fox shrine that I should find on today's stray, and it's a slightly unusual one. While most shrines are free standing, this one is a connecting wall between two houses. A pair of tiny porcelain foxes resides within. And although it doesn't have Inari in its name, the Inari emblem on its hangings clearly marks it as an Inari shrine.

535 ~ Fukumashi Inari

Japanese Name: 福増稲荷
Romanized Reading: Fukumashi Inari

Address:
〒600-8087 Kyoto, Shimogyo Ward, Hinoshitacho, 31
Coordinates:
 34.99855,135.76203

By now, it's already gotten dark. Night falls more quickly here, but I've also found and visited a bunch of other shrines on my way south.

Anyway, this one is a side shrine of Choukoji (長香寺 "Superior Smell Temple"), and it is watched over not only by a pair of life-sized stone foxes as well as a pair of tiny porcelain foxes, but also a pair of life-sized stone dogs on the outer gates. It's rare to see both dogs and foxes at the same shrine, but this is one of them.

Location: Kyoto-Nakagyou
Address:

Coordinates:
 35.0050,135.7674

A tiny side shrine of Nishiki Tenmangu (錦天満宮 "Brocade Heavenly Full Shrine"). That one is particularly noteworthy because it is directly adjunct to the Shinkyogoku Doori (新京極通 "New Capital Settlement Road"), which is a roofed shopping street. The shrine itself is open air, which makes it feel like a courtyard to the shopping street.

It is literally crammed into a small courtyard too! And if you go past the main shrine to the left, you arrive on a few square meters with three tiny side shrines, one of which is this one. A total of nine tiny porcelain foxes hide within.

Located at the tip of a fork in the road, there's this tiny shrine, which true to its name is located in the southeast of Motoyoshicho (元吉町 "Originally Lucky Town"). Two life-sized stone foxes lurk behind the plants of this one.

532 ~ Kankame Ookami

Japanese Name: 観龜大神
Romanized Reading: Kankame Jinja
English Translation: Observing Turtle Shrine

Despite its name, there don't seem to be any turtles to observe here. Instead, there's two pairs of white stone foxes - one at the outer gate, and another in front of the shrine - and in both of which, the left one has a kit with it, thus bringing the vixen side count to 14:34.

531 ~ Arakuma Inarisha

Japanese Name: 荒熊稲荷社

One of several side shrines of Daishougun Jinja (大将軍神社 "Commander-in-Chief Shrine"). This one features a pair of life-sized stone foxes, as well as another small pair of white foxes that I believe is made out of clay instead of the usual porcelain. They are definitely of an unique design, although they still resemble the run-off-the-mill white foxes.

530 ~ Manzoku Inari Jinja Kyouseki

Japanese Name: 満足稲荷神社旧跡
Romanized Reading: Manzoku Inari Jinja Kyouseki

Address:
〒606-8345 Kyoto, Sakyo Ward, Higashimonzenchō, 527

This tiny side shrine features two quite old life-sized stone foxes, the left one of which features a kit, thus bringing the fixen side count to 12:34. There's also a sacred tree with a Shimenawa tied around it. The name makes it quite clear that this was probably the humble beginnings of Manzoku Inari Jinja.

529 BRONZE ~ Manzoku Inari Jinja

Japanese Name: 満足稲荷神社

Deity:
 Inari
Fox Count:
 10
First Visit:
3-Jan-2019

Address:
〒606-8345 Kyoto, Sakyo Ward, Higashimonzenchō, 527
Coordinates:
 35.01059,135.77846

A notable fox shrine, not to big, certainly no match to Fushimi Inari Taisha or Takenaka Inari Jinja, but still standing out that I want to give it special mention. There are four life sized fox pairs watching over this shrine, two of which are bronze, and two of which are stone. Furthermore, of both pairs, there's one where the right one is explicitly male, bringing the vixen side count to... uhhh... 12:33, I think? The last one explicit was Fushimi Inari Taisha, right?

Anyway, in addition there's also a pair of tiny porcelain foxes at the main shrine, as well as a sales point for Omamori, little foxes and wall hangings. I think I got one of the wall hangings that now decorates my Fox Loft at this shrine.

Oh, and also, at the time of my posting this, it has now been exactly 7 years since I visited this shrine. I wonder how much has changed there since then.
