369 ~ Mitaka Ookami, Fukuyoshi Daimyoujin (and more)

Japanese Names: 末廣大神, 福吉大明神++
Romanized Readings: Mitaka Ookami, Fukuyoshi Daimyoujin++
English Translations: Not Yet Hawk Great Deity, Fortune Luck Great Radiant Deity++
Size: Tiny side shrine of Kobogataki within Fushimi Inari Taisha
Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 2
First Visit: 25-Dec-2018
Location: Kyoto-Fushimi
Address:27 Fukakusa Sasayamachō, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-0811
Coordinates
: 34.9655,135.7806

The ninth vulpine side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha, and the second one within the Kobogataki supercluster, located in the western area. Again, this one bears many several names on its three Iwakura, but I can only cleanly decipher two of them. Below, there's also an engraving that includes Inari, but one of the Kanji in there is unrecognizable, so I can't figure out what it says. It's pretty clear that this is an Inari shrine however. Two life-sized stone foxes watch over this one.

Location: Kyoto-Fushimi
Address:27 Fukakusa Sasayamachō, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-0811

The eight vulpine side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha, and the first one located in the area of Kobogataki (弘法ヶ滝 "Vast Law Waterfall"). This is where things start getting out of hand. Up until now, shrines had at most a few dozen vulpine side shrines. This one? This area alone? I counted 56. That's fifty-six! Almost five dozen fox shrines on the area of half a basketball court! Sitting tight by tight, to the point where I'm not even sure I counted correctly anymore. And that is only the first of several fox shrine superclusters that I should come across!

Since there's so many fox shrines on such a small space in here, I didn't record the precise locations of each one. However, the Kobogataki supercluster can be roughly divided into four quadrants, and since each quadrant is only about the size of a classroom, it should be possible to find the shrines within that. Right now, I am are in the western area, which is also where the entrance from the forest path that I have followed here is located.

Anyway, this one features two life-sized stone foxes. It also has more names than the four I wrote above, but I don't have photos of them all, and even if I had, some of them are really obscure and/or illegible, so here you go.

Besides,  see the little Torii in front of the Shrine? You can buy one of them at an affordable price, and then place it as an offering on your favorite of the several hundred shrines up here on the mountain.

367 ~ Tamahimesha

Japanese Name: 玉姫社

Coordinates

The seventh vulpine side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha. For this one, you have to follow the road of Torii up north the mountain for a bit, and then take a right turn to get to a little side shrine hub, where this is one of several. Four life-sized stone foxes watch over this shrine.

366 ~ Suehiro Ookami (Fox Pebbles)

Japanese Name: 未広大神
Romanized Reading: Suehiro Ookami
English Translation: Not Yet Wide Great Deity
Size: Tiny side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha
Deity: ?
Fox Count: 6
First Visit: 25-Dec-2018
Location: Kyoto-Fushimi
Address: 68 Fukakusa Yabunouchichō, Fushimi-ku, Kyōto-shi, Kyōto-fu 612-0882
Coordinates
: 34.96690,135.77533

The sixth vulpine side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha. Still located close to Okusha Houhaisho, this one occupies an areal that goes by many names. On the map it is labeled as Neagari-no-Matsu (根上りの松 "Pine Tree with Exposed Roots"), which is translated as "God luck pine tree". Then there's the Kitsune-no-Sazareishi (狐のさざれ石 "Fox Pebbles"), which likely refers to the row of Iwakura, which are guarded by three tiny porcelain foxes. And then, there's a small stone outcropping on which another three small stone foxes in various states of weathering reside.

365 ~ Inari Ookami

Japanese Name: 稲荷大神
Romanized Reading: Inari Ookami
English Translation: Inner Great Deity
Size: Tiny side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha
Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 6
First Visit: 25-Dec-2018
Location: Kyoto-Fushimi
Address: 68 Fukakusa Yabunouchichō, Fushimi-ku, Kyōto-shi, Kyōto-fu 612-0882
Coordinates
: 34.96657,135.77556

The fifth vulpine side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha, located next to Okusha Houhaisho. This one is so small that it's not marked on the big billboard map anymore - or any map, for that matter. And yet, it is there, and six life-sized stone foxes watch over it from behind the safety of the red wooden fence atop the grey stone ledge.

364 ~ Okusha Houhaisho

Japanese Name: 奥社奉拝所
Romanized Reading: Okusha Houhaisho
English Translation: Inner Shrine Worship Place
Size: Medium side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha
Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 4
First Visit: 25-Dec-2018
Location: Kyoto-Fushimi
Address: 68 Fukakusa Yabunouchichō, Fushimi-ku, Kyōto-shi, Kyōto-fu 612-0882
Coordinates
: 34.96652,135.77559

The fourth vulpine side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha, and the first one that is really located up the mountain, a good distance away from the main shrine, but definitely still a part of the sprawling complex. Two life-sized stone foxes sit watch on the way here, and two life-sized porcelain foxes reside within. They also sell fox-themed Omamori (good luck charms) here, so of course I get myself one of these.

Also, if you've ever seen photos of someone standing in a seemingly endless tunnel of Torii, this is where this was taken. The way up from the main shrine leads you through that famous tunnel of Torii. But it doesn't end here. While the way here takes you through the densest tunnel, there's thousands of Torii standing all over the mountain, each barely a meter apart from the next. From here on out, you can hike all over the mountain on a 3km round course without ever being too far from a Torii.

And since this is one of the major side shrines of Fushimi Inari Taisha, naturally it's got its own web page too.

363 ~ Byakkosha

Japanese Name: 白狐社

Coordinates
: 34.96737,135.77402

The third vulpine side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha, located directly to the left of Okumiya, and the last one in the inner compound. If I read the plaque right, this shrine enshrine Myaobusome-no-Kami (命婦専女神 "High-ranking-court-lady special goddess"), which is one of the incarnations of Inari. True to its name, a pair of life-sized stone Byakko reside in this shrine.

362 ~ Okumiya

Japanese Name: 奥宮

The second vulpine side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha, and the inner sanctuary, according to its name. A pair of life-sized stone foxes sits at the bottom of the stairs leading up to it, with a second pair at the top. A third pair then resides within the shrine itself, and is painted white.

Again, this shrine and the nearby Byakkosha have their own website here.

361 ~ Tamayama Inarisha

Japanese Name: 玉山稲荷社

The first vulpine side shrine of Fushimi Inari Taisha. It is located in what I consider the main compound, behind the main shrine and up a flight of stairs at the side of the hill. A pair of life-sized stone foxes reside within this shrine.

And since Fushimi Inari Taisha is one of these big shrines, it even has a website dedicated specifically to this and other nearby side shrines.

360 CRYSTAL ~ Fushimi Inari Taisha

Japanese Name: 伏見稲荷大社
Romanized Reading: Fushimi Inari Taisha
English Translation: Prostrated Hopes Inari Grand Shrine
Size: Complex
Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 7
First Visit: 25-Dec-2018
Location: Kyoto-Fushimi
Address: 68 Fukakusa Yabunouchichō, Fushimi-ku, Kyōto-shi, Kyōto-fu 612-0882
Coordinates

This is it! The Great One (巨稲荷一)! This is where Inari worship began in Japan and spread all over the land, and with it, the foxes. This is an iconic pilgrimage site, and one of the major attractions of Kyoto, to the point that not one but two nearby train stations are named after it (Inari and Fushimi Inari). The Inari station of the JR Nara Line is the closer one, depositing you right outside of the 200m approach to the shrine, with a large black (probably metal) fox right across the road.

The main shrine is then flanked by two pairs of large black metal foxes. The right one of the outside pair is explicitly male, which makes this the first pair in a long time where the gender of the foxes is explicitly or implicitly defined. In fact, the last one was Kikuya Inari Jinja in Nagano. This brings the vixen side count to 10:33, which is interesting, because you'd think that most shrines would follow the way that Fushimi Inari Taisha has it, with the male on the right and the female on the left. But clearly, most have it the other way around.

This shrine does not only cover an areal, it covers an entire mountain. And while I'm not sure about the exact distribution of property, the area that feels like it belongs to this shrine is roughly 80 hectares in size.

One of the most iconic parts of this shrine are the Torii tunnels. Plural, because there's a lot of them. And not just a lot lot, but a LOT lot. They're literally all over the mountain, coming in sizes from "Small enough to put in front of a tiny shrine" over "just the right size to comfortably walk through unless you're really tall" and going all the way to "mega-freaking HUGE".

Anyway, I already told you to buckle up for Kyoto, and I'll have to tell you to buckle up again because of the sheer number of vulpine side shrines featured at this shrine, which is so large that I couldn't even visit them all in just a single day! I think we might be able to finish them all this year, but they're well over a hundred, so there'll be an entire two Bonus Chapters included in all of that. So get ready for the biggest concentration of fox shrines in all of Japan!

The first fox shrine I found in Kyoto. The first of many, Many, MANY!!! Kyoto really is the origin of Inari worship, and so there's just SO MANY fox shrines around. So buckle up, because we're going to be in Kyoto for the rest of the year. It's also the first of many fox shrines that I should find on Christmas day.

This is a side shrine of Toufuku-ji (東福寺 "East Fortune Temple"), one of Kyotos several big temple complexes.  A pair of life-sized stone foxes watch over this one. It's probably an Inari shrine, but I can't be sure.

🡻Okayama - Kyoto🡹

This is just a marker post. All shrines before this post are in Okayama, and all shrines after this are in Kyoto.

Incidentally, I also saw someone getting a blessing for his new car here, in front of Okayama Jinja. There's a driveway so you can drive right up to the shrine from the nearby road, so maybe this is a specialty of this shrine.

Located right next to the approach to the previous shrine, there's a building containing the Kaminochou Kaikan (上之町會館 "Upper Town Art Gallery"). At the bottom of the staircase, there's this tiny shrine, which is how I spotted it in passing. This one features now fox statues, but has two fox lanterns.

This fox shrine is unusual in that it features both Komainu and foxes as its guardians. Normally, it's either one or the other. But as it is, a pair of Komainu sit watch at the outside gates, then there's one lone, life sized stone fox to the right of the approach to the shrine, and then another two just outside the shrine building.

A tiny fox shrine that I found in a backyard. On Google Maps, the whole block is a big construction site now, so this one might no longer be here. Then again, sometimes shrines are relocated or rebuilt in the wake of construction, so it might still be around.

Anyway, at the time of my visiting this one featured four tiny porcelain foxes, as well as two fox lanterns, which is the first time I saw those.
