196 ~ Tamakichi Inari Jinja

Japanese Name:  玉吉稲荷神社
Romanized Reading: Tamakichi Inari Jinja
English Translation: Lucky Jewel Inari Shrine
Size: Small
Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 2
First Visit: 3-Sep-2018
Location: Nagahama-Nakayama
Address:
5 Nakayamacho, Nagahama, Shiga 526-0022, Japan
Coordinates:
35.3895625,136.2729872

My theme for today's exploration stray is getting from my Airbnb place in Torahime (虎姫 "Tiger Princess") to the actual city of Nagahama. This is one of the fox shrines that I should find along the way, in the town of Nakayama (中山 "In the Middle of the Mountains"), which ironically is not anywhere near any mountains. A pair of life-sized stone foxes sit watch outside the shrine. The shadows of the leaves of the nearby bush paint a funny pattern on the forehead of the left fox in this picture, making it look like a Klingon.

195 ~ Nameless Shrine

Japanese Name

English Translation: ?
Size: Tiny Side Shrine of Iwagami Jinja
Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 1
First Visit: 3-Sep-2018
Location: Nagahama-Nakano
Address:
721 Nakanocho, Nagahama, Shiga 529-0103, Japan
Coordinates:
35.432075,136.260438

The first fox shrine that I should find in the greater Nagahama (長浜 "Long Beach") area. Since this is close to Kyoto, the fox capital of Japan, I should find quite a lot of fox shrines here despite only spending a single day exploring.

Anyway, this one is as modest as they come. Hidden on a forested hill in the rural district of Nakano (中野 "Middle Field"), there's Iwagami Jinja (岩上神社 "Shrine on the Boulder"), and that one features a tiny side shrine with a single solitary tiny porcelain fox to watch over it.

🡻Nanao - Nagahama🡹

This is just a marker post. The shrine before this post was in Nanao, and all Shrines until the next marker are in (or near) Nagahama.

The only fox shrine that I should find during my stay in Nanao (七尾 "Seven Tails") in Ishikawa-ken (石川県 "Stone River Prefecture"), on the prominent peninsula on the northwestern coast of Japan. Specifically, I am staying in the Wakura Onsen (和倉温泉 "Peaceful Warehouse Hot Springs") resort town. This town is famous for its hot springs, in which you can even boil eggs. In fact, this town has made a theme out of that, which is why I am always going to remember this place as Egg Utopia.

Anyway, a pair of life-sized stone foxes watch over this shrine, which is located not far from the famous egg boiling spring.

🡻Nagano - Nanao🡹

This is just a marker post. All shrines before this post were in Nagano, or nearby Yudanaka, and the next shrine is in Nanao.

The other foxy side shrine of Fussa Inari Jinja (again, it might be possible to count them as two separate shrines, but since they're right next to one another and also so tiny, I'll count them as one here). The little stone edifices are overgrown by ivy. Adorned with tiny flags, each is home to three tiny porcelain foxes.

One (or possibly two, but for the purposes of this blog I'm counting this as a single shrine) foxy side shrine of Fussa Inari Jinja. This one features a pair of weathered old life-sized stone foxes, one lacking its face, and the other its ears, along with eight tiny porcelain foxes, with four each watching over the tiny stone and tiny wood shrine buildings respectively.

189 BRONZE ~ Fussa Inari Jinja

A fox shrine located along a foot path at the edge of a hill, not far from aforementioned Jouyama Doubutsuen. Two life sized stone foxes watch over this shrine along with a dozen tiny ones made from porcelain and stone. Half of the tiny ones are also gilded, which is something that you see occasionally.

In addition to the already above-average number of foxes on the main shrine, it also features two foxy side shrines, which earns it the rank of Bronze Fox Shrine in my book.

A fox shrine near the northeastern edge of Nagano, where the valley floor meets the hills. Located to the north of the Zenkouji (善光寺 "Virtuous Light Temple") complex and west of the Jouyama Doubutsuen ("Castle Mountain Zoo" 城山動物園) - both of which are basically free of charge - this area is generally very recommendable. If you have just one day to explore Nagano, I'd suggest you spend it here. Anyway, a pair of life-sized stone foxes of unique make watch over this shrine.

A small fox shrine not far from the Gondou (権堂 "Authority Hall") station of the Nagano Dentetsu (長野電鉄 "Long Field Electric Iron" = "Nagano Electric Railway"). Two pairs of life-sized stone foxes sit watch outside, with the inner pair als sheltering two tiny porcelain foxes, of which another four reside within the Shrine building.

185 BRONZE ~ Kikuya Inari Jinja

Japanese Name:  菊屋稲荷神社
Romanized Reading: Kikuya Inari Jinja
English Translation: Chrysanthemum Shop Inari Shrine

Fox Count: Many
First Visit: 23-Aug-2018
Location: Nagano
Address:
Midorichō-1091 Tsuruga, Nagano-shi, Nagano-ken 381-0000

Still close to the Nagano station, I come across this shrine with many little foxes. With two life-sized atone fox guardians and a whole bunch of tiny fox statues of various make, there must be at least four dozen foxes here. The right one of the big foxes features a kit, thus bringing the vixen side count to 9:33.

184 ~ Hakusan Inari Aidono Jinja

Japanese Name:  白山稲荷合殿神社

First Visit: 23-Aug-2018
Location: Nagano
Coordinates:
36.6457117,138.1961798

The first of quite a bunch of fox shrines I should find in Nagano. In fact, today alone I should find more fox shrines than in the whole last month combined. This one is a side shrine of Nanase Kannonji (七瀬観音寺  "Seven Rapids Kannon Temple"). Inside, there are at least 7 tiny porcelain foxes, one tiny black stone fox, and two porcelain foxes that are a little larger, but still small.

183 ~ Miyazakika

Japanese Name:  宮崎家

Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 12
First Visit: 20-Aug-2018
Location: Yudanaka
Coordinates:

A small fox shrine in a forested bit near the edge of town, not far from the Ugoki-Iwa (動き岩 "Moving Rock"), a rocking stone in the middle of the woods. There may also be wild monkeys around, so watch your tail! These monkeys are likely also the reason why all the fox statues are safely locked away behind the doors of this shrine, which is built into a little cave in the rock. This is also already the last fox shrine that I should find in Yudanaka.

181 ~ Inari Jinja

Japanese Name:  稲荷神社
Romanized Reading: Inari Jinja
English Translation: Inari Shrine
Size: Small Side Shrine of Yasaka Jinja
Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 4
First Visit: 11-Aug-2018
Location: Naoetsu
Address:
4 Chome-2-25 Nishihonchō, Jōetsu-shi, Niigata-ken 942-0004

A fox shrine that I should find in the port town of Naoetsu (直江 "Straightforward Bay") while straying from the ferry terminal to the train station. I could have taken the bus, but then I would have missed out on this and other shrines along the way.

Anyway, this is one of several side shrines of Yasaka Jinja (八坂神社 "Eight Slopes Shrine"), where two life-sized, old, overgrown stone foxes sit watch outside. Those two are already pretty battered, with one missing ears and muzzle, and the other missing a paw and part of the tile. The two tiny foxes inside the shrine are better sheltered, and as such in better shape.

No Fox Shrines on Sado?

Sado, or Sadogashima (佐渡島 "Assisted Crossing Island") is the sixth-largest island of the Japanese archipelago, and an unusual place. For one, despite two extended day trips of searching, I shouldn't be able to find a single fox shrine on the whole island. That doesn't mean there are none, though (since searching the whole island extensively would probably take at least a week even if I had a bike), but at the very least, it means there is a significant shortage of fox shrines on the island.

The reasons for this are twofold: One historical, and one geographical.

The geographical reason is simple: Since Sadogashima is surrounded by deep waters, it was not connected to the mainland in the last ice age, and thus foxes are not endemic there. In fact, prior to humans introducing mammals to the island, Sado was a veritable birds' paradise, comparable to New Zealand.

The historical reason is more complex and dates back to the 7th century, ever since when Sado was a popular place to exile political dissidents to. Since this included a large number of Buddhist monks who subsequently built temples on the island, there's an over-abundance of Buddhist temples on the island, and not all that many Shinto shrines. As opposed to the mainland, where Shinto shrines outnumber Buddhist temples by a factor of 3, here it's exactly the other way around.

Combine those two factors and it's not surprising that there are no (or very few) fox shrines on Sado. However, if there is one fox shrine on Sado after all, it might lurk at the coordinates 37.9034571,138.3425674 , in the mountains of Shimokuroyama (下黒山 "Lower Black Mountain").

180 ~ Toyoteru Inari Jinja

Japanese Name:  豊照稲荷神社
Romanized Reading: Toyoteru Inari Jinja
English Translation: Bountiful Shine Inari Shrine
Size: Small
Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 4
First Visit: 8-Aug-2018
Location: Niigata
Address:
1-2545 Higashiminatomachidori, Chuo Ward, Niigata, 951-8028

The only fox shrine that I should find on my one-day stayover in the city of Niigata (新潟 "New Lagoon"). A pair of life-sized stone foxes sit watch outside, and a pair of smaller ones resides within. The ones inside are probably made from porcelain, but it's kinda hard to tell with the light coming from behind them. They definitely aren't standard design porcelain foxies though.

179 ~ Yamato Inari Jinja

Japanese Name:  大和稲荷神社
Romanized Reading: Yamato Inari Jinja
English Translation: Great Harmony Inari Shrine
Size: Small
Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 2
First Visit: 3-Aug-2018
Location: Morioka
Address:
3 Chome-18-6 Honchodori, Morioka, Iwate 020-0015

The final fox shrine that I should find in Morioka. A pair of life-sized stone foxes of unique design watch over this one. Regrettably, recent map data suggests that this one was replaced by a car park, so odds are it only lives on in my pictures and memories now. A Google street view image of 2020 also still displays it, so it must have been demolished some time between then and now.

Incidentally, Yamato is the name of ancient Japan during the eponymous Yamato Era from AD250–710.

178 ~ Kawamori Inari Jinja

Japanese Name:  川守稲荷神社
Romanized Reading: Kawamori Inari Jinja
English Translation: River Protector Inari Shrine
Size: Small
Deity: Inari
Fox Count: 2
First Visit: 3-Aug-2018
Location: Morioka
Address:
1-10 Morioka Ekimae Kitadori, Morioka, Iwate 020-0033

A little shrine that I should come across during my last trip into Morioka, when our host sent me and the other helpers there to go and enjoy the Morioka Sansa Oodori Matsuri there. I should use the time leading up to that festival to go look for more shrines in central Morioka, and my search should not be in vain.

So, what do you do when you want a tall office building somewhere, but there's a shrine there and you really don't want to upset the deity of that shrine? Well, with this little shrine, the answer was to integrate the shrine into the newly built building. Located on the first floor, the shrine is still basically outside, accessible to the public, with the rest of the building build above it. Two life-sized stone foxes watch over it.
